    The Rutgers University Foundation (RUF) seeks an Associate Director of Student Philanthropy to cultivate a culture of philanthropy among the student body. S/he will be tasked with creating a university-wide student philanthropy education plan in close alignment with the strategic plans of RUF. The Associate Director will be joining our team at a time of strategic growth to increase student philanthropy and will be tasked with fostering the education around the value of philanthropic impact. As the student philanthropy consultant for New Brunswick, Newark, Camden and RBHS the Associate Director will report to the Director of Next Generation Philanthropy.


    The Associate Director will be responsible for showing an increase in student engagement and student giving by collaborating with a variety of Foundation and University populations. The Associate Director will be expected to partner with Rutgers University Alumni Association (RUAA) staff and its student group, The Scarlet Council, as well as University Student Affairs to ensure student education. The Associate Director will also be responsible for mentoring and leading the student philanthropy group, TAG (Teaching Annual Giving) Team. In addition to hosting annual TAG Day events, Rutgers Giving Day, and other student philanthropy educational initiatives, the Associate Director will also oversee Scarlet Seniors, a leading Senior Giving Campaign in the Big Ten conference. The Scarlet Seniors program uniquely asks students to make sustaining gifts to help build donor retention.


    The ideal candidate will come from a background of higher education or nonprofit work. S/he will have demonstrated experience creating programs to educate student populations about philanthropy. The Associate Director will have strong organizational, interpersonal and leadership skills with the ability to communicate and articulate ideas. The Associate Director will be expected to take initiative and juggle multiple projects at once in collaboration with a variety of Foundation and University partners. S/he will be expected to have experience working with, mentoring and leading student populations. A Bachelor’s degree is required and an advanced degree is welcome.

    RUF has 224 full time employees (63 frontline fundraisers) and is in an enviable moment of growth and expansion. The Foundation’s primary functions are development and alumni relations, which collaborate with Foundation and Alumni Communications all associated support services. RUF employees enjoy a collaborative relationship with the University, sharing many resources and benefits, yet still maintaining its status as an independent 501(c) 3 non-profit. The Foundation’s main offices are located in New Brunswick, where this AVP will be located along with his/her associated staff and departments. The RUF also has advancement offices in Rutgers-Newark and Rutgers-Camden, and a fast-growing advancement team dedicated to Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences.

    Specific Responsibilities and Duties:

    • Coordinate with the Director for Next Generation Philanthropy to develop strategic plans for university-wide student education. Continue building a culture of philanthropy throughout the student body.
    • Facilitate recruitment, retention, training and advising of the TAG Team. Manage TAG Team social media channels and online strategies. Coordinate educational and the signature programs and events, such as TAG Day and Rutgers Giving Day and ensure student and colleague participation. Mentor TAG student leaders as they set goals for events.
    • Identify opportunities for collaboration with partners at the RUAA and in student affairs to increase student engagement now and in the future. Partner with student affairs staff to infuse philanthropy education into orientation and admissions tours. Build relationships with student leaders and student organizations to identify new opportunities for student philanthropy education.
    • Develop a system for benchmarking and analyzing student philanthropy programming and communications. Compile information into reports and presentations for leadership to understand program impact.
    • Develop strategies and execute the senior giving campaign, working in partnership with part-time student Senior Class Campaign Coordinator and committee, ensuring steady growth of the program, with a particular emphasis on sustaining donors. Track and code senior donors throughout the year.
    • Responsible for overseeing one part-time student Senior Class Campaign Coordinator, the senior giving committee and TAG Team. Manage and oversee budget for these organizations and their programming.


    Qualities of the Ideal Candidate:

    • Bachelor’s degree with 3-5 years of annual giving, student affairs, volunteer management, external relations or a closely related experience in the higher education or nonprofit setting. Experience advising, leading, motivating and inspiring college student leaders or student workers. Demonstrated experience engaging with student population or next generation philanthropy is highly preferred.
    • Strong organizational, interpersonal and leadership skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to articulate ideas and present to a variety of audiences
    • The ability to take initiative and work well independently, while also being a team player. Ability to partner with University and Foundation staff. Strong experience multi-tasking and managing multiple projects at once with a clear goal orientation.
    • Understanding of social media content management, event creation and proficiency with computers and office software
    • Must be willing to travel and work a flexible schedule that includes evenings and weekends as needed. Valid driver’s license required for travel.
