    The Rutgers University Foundation (RUF) seeks an innovative, collegial and service oriented Senior Director of Data Analytics and Insights to serve as the trusted partner to the high performing fundraisers at Rutgers University. This newly created role will join the Foundation at a time of increased investment in Data Analytics and an opportunity to set the stage for how the organization utilizes analytics and insights to shape strategy. With a focus on providing strategic recommendations based on data, the Senior Director will be a forward focused, data-savvy professional with the capacity to work on both high level and nuanced aspects of data analytics, possessing a track record of building industry leading best practices that support the creation and maintenance of rich, deep and meaningful insights. This role provides ample resources and the opportunity to implement, grow, and lead a data analytics program part of a nationally acclaimed university.

     

    The Senior Director will work with some of the best advancement professionals in the industry, who along with the rest of the Foundation team, have successfully raised over $200 million this past fiscal year, constituting the best fundraising year in the history of the University. The Senior Director will be joining the Foundation at a time of great enthusiasm for a future multi-billion-dollar campaign, new Foundation facilities and office space, as well as an environment that encourages creativity, cutting-edge technology and out-of-the-box ways to work efficiently and intelligently. As the Foundation gears up for our future campaign, leadership is focusing investments on non-frontline fundraising functions in order to strengthen our infrastructure and position Rutgers for success.

     

    This role will oversee one Data Analytics Specialist and work to build and manage a team of experts responsible for advising on or providing insights on specific data related to the Foundation, with a view to increasing the effectiveness of the team in coming years based on trends found within data. The successful candidate will have an entrepreneurial spirit, demonstrate an understanding of data analytics and research methodologies, and be willing to initiate and lead projects to strengthen the Foundation’s strategic planning. The challenge of making continual improvements while maintaining a high level of client service presents an extremely exciting and rewarding opportunity for this role as the Foundation increases its investment in departments such as Data Analytics. The Senior Director will be a critical partner to the Executive Leadership Group and work closely with numerous key areas of the foundation including but not limited to Information Technology, Prospect Research and Management, Annual Giving, Alumni Relations, and Talent Management.

     

    Reporting to the Vice President of Strategic Advancement Solutions, the Senior Director of Strategic Data Analytics and Insights directs activities that define the creation and strategic direction of the overall Foundation. The incumbent will provide reliable and timely high-level qualitative and quantitative data and trend analysis that supports the strategic planning and operational effectiveness of key programs. The Senior Director will partner with fundraisers and other staff at the Rutgers University Foundation to employ data mining, forecasting and statistical analysis techniques to help identify, classify, understand and cultivate insights related to all aspects of the Rutgers University Foundation. This person must have excellent communication skills; advanced skills using statistical techniques to turn data into insights; computer literacy to include industry standard software; and experience articulating values, information, and compelling cases to multiple audiences, one-on-one, and through formal proposals and/or presentations. Impeccable project management skills are required. An accessible and collegial leadership style is a prerequisite, as is the creativity and energy to convince and persuade varying constituencies of new ideas and directions.

    Julie Shadle, Vice President of Strategic Advancement Solutions

     

    Julie Shadle joined Rutgers University Foundation in July 2010, was named Vice President for Campaign and Development Operations in November 2010, and continues to provide executive leadership for the rebranded division of Strategic Advancement Solutions.

     

    In her capacity at Rutgers, Shadle served as the campaign director for the university’s successful $1 billion campaign, Our Rutgers, Our Future. She provides strategic and managerial leadership to the functions of Donor Relations, Development Research, Prospect Management, IT and Gift Processing/Records, and Campaign Operations as well as administrative leadership for the activities of the foundation’s Board of Overseers.

     

    Prior to joining Rutgers, Shadle had a long and distinguished career at Princeton University, where in her final position she served as Director, Development Services. Julie made an indelible impact on Princeton’s success providing technical, information, and communication support to three highly successful comprehensive campaigns and contributing to university-wide process and change management efforts. She has served the advancement services community through user group and product advisory leadership positions. She holds a B.A. in History from Shepherd University.

     

    Senior Director of Data Analytics and Insights:

     

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Proactively consults with business teams across the Foundation to understand the best opportunities to maximize fundraising and engagement results through quantitative and qualitative research and analytics. Works with Foundation leadership to solve complex business problems and to identify opportunities for strategic growth through analytic solutions.  Proactively identifies trends or developments related to business units to provide ongoing analytical support and expertise.
    • Collaborates with Foundation and University IT departments in the design, development and implementation of business intelligence and analytics frameworks and solutions. Designs and creatives predictive models and forecasting analytical tools.
    • Extracts, transforms, and manipulates complex data sets from various sources using advanced statistical techniques to turn data into insights, which can be quickly adopted by various business units across the organization to improve results/create efficiencies/reduce costs.
    • Provides leadership on the overall strategy to develop the organization’s data analytics and insights program including a staffing plan to address current and future needs. Manages a Data Analytics Specialist and recruits, trains and develops additional staff as identified by the strategic plan.  Trains and educates the Foundation team on the function of data analytics.
    • Provides high quality ongoing customer support; answering questions, resolving problems and building solutions.

     

    Qualities of the Ideal Candidate:

    • Requires a Bachelor’s degree (Master’s desirable) in fields such as mathematics, statistics, marketing, information technology, business, and/or similar fields.
    • Minimum of five to seven years professional experience turning data into insights using data analytic software such as SPSS, SAS and R and advanced statistical techniques such as linear and logistic regression.
    • Minimum of five to seven years of experience with translating, simplifying, communicating and presenting data insights back to senior business leadership.
    • Minimum of three years of experience with data reporting and visualization tools such as Tableau (preferred), QlikSense or Cognos
    • Demonstrates analytical and project design/management and creative problem-solving skills required. Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities and meet challenging and changing deadlines.
    • Excellent communication skills, including written and oral are required. Highly developed interpersonal skills will also be needed since this is a managerial position that will supervise one or more full time staff member and manage relationships with fundraisers and management.
    • Must be able to work independently as well as coordinate projects with others. This individual must possess a high degree of professionalism and ethics and be sensitive at all times to the discretion necessary to be successful in this field.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills, and group facilitation capabilities and ability to make key decisions on projects.
